Son La Museum is within the historical vestige complex of Old French Prison & Museum established in 1908 by French colony. It majorly exhibits ethnic content of which thousands of prehistoric objects depicturing cultural specificity of 12 brotherly ethnic groups living in Son La area are stored and displayed.
Located on top of Khau Ca Hill, Son La city, the museum is the prefered destination of both domestic and international visitors. Standing in the shadow of high trees here, visitors can servey a panoramic view of Son La city. In particular, the museum still preserves a collection of encient Thai and Dao textbooks with nearly 1000  books of all genres of epic, folk poem and so on.

Coming here, visitors shall be welcome and guided by an ethnic minority guide during the visit. Son La Museum is divided into 3 exhibition chambers with the richness and vividness of subjects.The first floor chamber shows Son La prehistoric precious objects including handheld artifacts of all kinds of stone, iron and copper dated back thousand years ago that were found out in many caves and relics such as Chieng On, Pac Ma and Da River flat.

The second floor chamber with the subject of “Uncle Ho and Son La ethnic groups” is composed of 3 contents, sucessively: Highlights of the career and the great contributions of President Ho Chi Minh to the process of the country building and establishment; Uncle Ho and Son La ethnic groups; Following Uncle Ho teachings, Son La people today still strive for a more prosperous homeland building.

The last chamber presents many lively artifacts helping visitors get more knowledge of living and production culture of all 12 ethnic groups living in Son La including pottery, jewelry, weaving frames, costume and so on which make their cultural specificity.

Visiting Old French Prison located next door to Son La Museum will be the next activity. It was a French penal colony whe-re anticolonial revolutionaries were incarcerated. It was destroyed by the ‘off-loading’ of unused ammunition by US warplanes after bombing raids, but is now partially restored. Rebuilt turrets stand guard over crumbling cells and a famous lone surviving peach tree, planted by To Hieu, a 1940s inmate. The prison is a famous historical relic, a great school that demonstrates all the cruelness of the colonist as well as the braveness of the Vietnamese patriotic soldiers like To Hieu, Le Duc Tho, Truong Chinh, Nguyen Luong Bang… Visitors will be told touching stories about their lives and in-prison activities.

Now, Son La Museum is a famous destination that attracts a large number of visitors consist of tourists, students coming for the purpose of study, sightseeing, research. Better services, object addition and making it to be familiar to tourists on the way to explore the Northwest are the things the museum management board has been striving for./.
