It takes about 45 minutes to go upstream Ma River by motorboat f-rom Quynh Nhai town to Pac Ma commune, visitors can easily go for a tour to the historical banyan tree on Pac Ma hill surrounded by a vast expanse of water.
Grew up naturally on a hill shaped like a saddle that belonged to Pac Ma village, Quynh Nhai district 60 years ago, it was about 300 meters far f-rom inter-provincial road no.171. During the period of the anti-French resistance war, Quynh Nhai was in an importantly strategic position in the aspect of military and was the gateway to go to Tuan Giao as well as Dien Bien f-rom Than Uyen. In 1948, the French colonial burned over 100 rooftops with villager’s entire property at Pac Ma and Mun villages. Lots of revolutionary loyals and newly trained revolutionists were arrested and killed ruthlessly whilst the remaining villagers were herded together for a easy control.
Recognizing clearly the situation and the strategically key position of Son La in general and Quynh Nhai as the gateway to enter f-rom Than Uyen in particular, on 21st January 1948 the General Command issued directions no.114/CT-BT and 115/CT-BT specifying the 10th  interregion’s basic missions of northwest compatriot realease and revolutionary base establishment. Follow the interregion’s guideline, Quyet Tien volunteer team set off on 29th March 1948 and reached Tu Le, Yen Bai on 29th June 1948. The mission of this team was to consolidate Tu Le area to use it as a springboard for an attack on Muong Trai (Muong La).
Based on the General Command’s consideration, the revolutionary soldiers destroyed 72 enemies of the 17th regiment called Tabo of the Frech Far East Expeditionary Corps and collected a large number of weapons in the area of Pac Ma banyan tree. After the end of the Pac Ma battle, the entire Quynh Nhai district was freed and the victory at this battle helped to pierce the Da River lines of the French colonial force as well as to creat favourable conditions for 2 Northwest freed attacks. The Northwest operation came to a successful end, showing the French lost an importantly partial force and a large area of 28,500 km2 with over 250,000 people got liberated. The Northwest has become a revolutionary base in line with Viet Bac base.
The Pac Ma banyan tree has been our successful evidence in the Northwest campaign and a glorious chapter in the local history to enlighten the future generations to study and work appropriately to the sacrifice of the predecessor. Currently, it is still full of vitality on the hill surrounded by a vast expanse of Son La hyd-ropower reservoir. Sitting on board to the monument, visitors can sightsee the spectacular beauty of the natural landscape and go fishing and especially burn incense in memory of revolutionary soldiers who died to protect Quynh Nhai, Son La – an unseparable part of Vietnam./.
