Currently in Son La, Dao ethnic minority people account for 1.82% to 16,088; mainly live in the mountainous areas of the Bac Yen, Phu Yen, Moc Chau and Quynh Nhai districts. The Dao in Son La has three local groups called Dao Tien, Dao Quan Chet, Dao Do pesons; Between groups Dao with other groups distinguished primarily by the clothing, especially women's clothing. Women's Apparel richer menswear, today still retains the traditional features unique pattern.
Dao people live in areas of high slivers between the coastal hills or valleys.  They settled into villages, each of which has specific boundaries, called, with forests, land, have graveyard, a private water supply.  The villages are usually structured in the form of collective security, each f-rom a few tens to hundreds of rooftops. They have three types of accommodation:  House on stilts, a half stils and half land in which the soil types mainly. Form of shifting cultivation mainly nomadic suites, today people have lived settled and have cultivated paddy fields, planting crops, raising quite developed; weaving, embroidery, wax printing patterns of traditional crafts are typical. During the implementation of renovation, the social economic life of the people has been a lot of changes; Since change subsidy mechanism, economic cooperatives to the household and the market take care of household production, primarily subsistence food then traded on markets. The people's life has been stabilized and improved.

All of the Dao’s men have to go through this rite; it's customary to celebrate this rite for male children of 13-14 years old. The rite is sacredly carried on with witness of shaman and all people in the village. The Dao’s boys after passing “Maturing Rite” are deemed to have rights and responsibilities as adults to their ethnic community. To the Red Dao women, before getting married, they have had their hair shaved and waxed with witness of their family.
Annually, on February 14th, all women take part in the “washing hair” ceremony. On this day, they don’t allow any strangers to enter the village. This is a custom that currently only the elderly remain reserved. The entire educational customs above have made Dao ethnic become honest, simple- hearted and laborious. They have a high sense of community, supporting and helping each other, cultural exchanges, security...
Dao are good at cooking. They make lots of tasty food such as: taro soup, grilled fish, colorful sticky rice, deer wine... They are very hospitable. When they have important guests, apart f-rom boiled chicken, grilled fish,… They also make taro soup added buffalo-hide (or ox-hide), prepare lacquered chopsticks for guests. It is shown that they have expressed admiration to who visit their home. This typical culture of the Dao tradition is still reserved.
In the Dao families, there are usually 3-4 generations living together in harmony. With the monogamy, man has always played a key role in the family. If the husband is died, the eldest son of the house will take his dad’s role; In case of small children, the mother will be the hostess until the son is old enough to undertake the role. However, Dao is not to be conceived host blood. In the case of having no son, they would choose adopted son or son- in- law to be inheritor. Dao families never treat sons differently f-rom daughters; all families desire many children. When there is a serious problem happens, all family’s members- husband, wife, eldest son, even the elderly- keep together discussing. Thus, the Dao families are very affectionate, always united and happy.
Currently, Dao ethnic have also reserved some of their family lines, for example, Trieu, Ly, Dang, Ban, but each family line has many offshoots. Male hierarchism in their family lines is clear; every family has a head man called the chief. In the village, who is prestigious is elected to be the village chief- representative of the villagers implementing the foreign relations with the others or the regions. He plays an important role in organizing community activities such as protecting of land resources, maintaining the traditions, customary law, order and security, leading villagers’ production, ensuring the obligations of villagers to the leaders...
In Son La, today Dao ethnic always play an important role in the ethnic communities on economic development, socio-cultural, security defense ... They have preserved many traditional culture features that bold cultural painting of  54 ethnics in Vietnam.
