According to the literature, custom of dying teeth black is not for Thai people only. It is proven that the beauty standards of Vietnamese women are women with long black hair, in 4-part dress, and black teeth.
However, that beauty only currently appears on literature, historical documents and materials. In Son La, there are people remaining the method of dying teeth although the number of these people is limited. It is certain that the method and the manner of dying teeth are entirely different f-rom other ethnic groups.
Thai people begin dying their teeth when they are 14 or 15 years old, when all baby-teeth are replaced, tooth structure is stable and firm. The raw material for dying teeth is resin of "May cu" tree, a kind of woody plant growing naturally and popularly on the northwestern mountains. This is also a kind of tree used to be firewood for cooking because it catches fire well and burns long and deposit (soot) is black. At the beginning of autumn, when the trees stop growing cycle, grandmothers, mothers often go to forests to se-lect the upper arm-sized branches of "May cu" trees and then expose them on the roof to avoid high temperatures to destroy oil layers of the resin.
To dye teeth black, first clean teeth by taking pieces of areca to repeatedly scrub the surface of the teeth, then burn segments of the "May cu" trees remaining resin. When the smoke rises, they heat the trapezoid-shaped iron rod for smoke to cling to the iron rod. After that, they use two fingers to take the black smoke on the iron rod and then rub it into the teeth. Rubbing the black smoke into the teeth takes 30-40 minutes so that the teeth are shiny black. After dying teeth, do not eat hot and hard food within 7-10 days. For the first time of dying, after 6 months, dye teeth again with the same dyeing process, and then the dying is conducted once per year so the teeth will not be faded.
Modern life today with the availability of toothpastes, cosmetics changes conception of beautiful teeth. Therefore, the custom of dying teeth black has gradually lost, leaving only a few elderly people in Son La, previously dying teeth and now still having demand for dying teeth to protect and beautify teeth. One of typical people is Lo Thi Tieng living at Noong Bon village, Bo Muoi commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La province. Anyway, the custom of dying teeth black is a traditional beauty of Thai people in protecting and beautifying teeth. Also, this is a custom reflecting the concept of beauty in the lives of the Thai people in Son La.
