Then Luong mountain village is about 1 km far f-rom the center of Chieng Dong town. It is situated between two long rows of mountains decorated with gardens of fruits and lovely houses on stilts. The village has long been famous for brocade made by the Thai ethnic people.
Brocade is called “khit” in the language of the Thai ethnic minority. Holding a brocade made by the Thai craftsmen, you will see a mixture of the green of trees, red, white and pink of forest flowers and bright yellow of the sunlight.
However, brocade products have just been manually made and makers have to seek consumption markets by themselves. Consequently, categories of brocade products are not diverse, including bags, blanket and pillow covers, Pieu headscarf, etc.
Keeping the value of the brocade making also means we are preserving a traditional culture of the Thai ethnic minority. The brocade village of Then Luong is likely to succeed in making profitable and competitive products if the makers know how to harmonize the nationality and the modernization when making brocade.
